Parents are an integral part of the IFSP/IEP/IIIP team, which also includes teachers, school administrators, related services personnel, and sometimes the student. As part of this team, parents ensure that their child receives appropriate early intervention and educational opportunities and services.

| | Federal Guidance | With the passage of IDEA 2004, states are now required to report on three specific areas of family/parent involvement and family outcomes in their SPPs and APRs. The statute contains specific requirements regarding parent notification of legal rights and involvement in IEP/IFSP meetings. NCLB also contains a specific definition for "family involvement" and has corresponding requirements regarding legal notifications and substantive communications between families and education agencies.
